ATTENTION: Manitoba Occupational Therapists

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) Test organization recently released information regarding their new training and certification. The following information is important to consider as practising therapists: It was announced by the Dr. Ziad Nasreddine, MoCA Copyright Owner, in 2019 that by September 1, 2020 certification would be mandatory for all who wanted to administer the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). https://www.mocatest.org/mandatory-moca-test-training/

A recent announcement has extended the deadline to December 1, 2020 due to the disruptions of COVID-19 https://www.mocatest.org/faq/

In January 2020, the Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists (MSOT) looked at ways to support members in meeting the new certification requirements. Shortly after, CAOT released a significant reduced rate for the certification training, meeting the needs of many MSOT members. We hope this message provides you with key information to remain informed of the new requirements and to be aware of the importance of professional liability, risk, and competency. Here are a few things you should know: • There is an expectation that each person who administers the MoCA has taken the certification – visit the MoCA website to review the requirements and potential waivers. • The COTM Practice Guideline on Occupational Therapy Assessments speaks to the requirement to meet legislated, regulatory and organizational requirements • CAOT offers reduced rate for the MoCA Certification training https://www.caot.ca/client/product2/896/item.html If you have specific regulatory questions, please contact COTM by emailing Sharon Eadie, COTM Executive Director at sharon.eadie@cotm.ca
